The POW/MIA or "Missing Man" Table

POW_MIA (1).jpg

The POW/MIA Missing Man Table ceremony is a dignified and solemn moment in many formal dinners and other occasions.  There have been many narratives written about the ceremony, but the symbolism is quite consistent.

The arrangement features a table, typically placed to the side, with a single chair. The table is adorned with a white tablecloth, a single candle, an optional book of faith, an inverted glass, and a single red rose in a vase, all tied together with a yellow ribbon.  A plate with a slice of lemon and a small amount of salt is set on the table.

There is nothing more poignant than seeing the empty chair at a POW/MIA table, which holds deep significance throughout this ritual. Observing the ceremony surrounding this meaningful event stirs a range of emotions. The ceremony is held multiple times throughout the year during official military events, serving as a remembrance and tribute to all POWs and MIAs.
